Do we believe God’s word? God sent a prophet to tell Jeroboam that God was going to take ten kingdoms from Solomon’s son and give them to him. God told Jeroboam:
1 Kings 11:38 Then it shall be, if you heed all that I command you, walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then I will be with you and build for you an enduring house, as I built for David, and I will give you Israel.
God did just as He told Jeroboam yet Solomon’s son was given two kingdoms for there was to always be a light for David. Rehoboam was given Judah and Benjamin. Rehoboam decided to gather the chosen fighting men and to go fight Jeroboam but God was merciful and sent a prophet to warn Rehoboam and he listened and obeyed.
1 Kings 12:24 Thus says the Lord: “You shall not go up nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel. Let every man return to his house, for this thing is from Me.” Therefore they obeyed the word of the Lord, and turned back, according to the word of the Lord.
Rehoboam prospered and the Lord was with him. Remember Jeroboam was told what God would do for him? Jeroboam became fearful that if the people went to worship in Jerusalem their hearts would turn back to king Rehoboam even though God had given him His word. Jeroboam had gold calves made for the people to worship instead of leading them to worship God. God did send a prophet to warn Jeroboam yet he did not heed the warning.
1 Kings 14:7-10 Go tell Jeroboam, ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel:’ “Because I exalted you from among the people, and made you ruler over My people Israel, and tore the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it to you; and yet you have not been as My servant David, who kept My commandments and who followed Me with all his heart, to do only what was right in My eyes; but you have done more evil than all who were before you, for you have gone and made for yourself other gods and molded images to provoke Me to anger, and have cast Me behind your back; therefore behold! I will bring disaster on the house of Jeroboam, and I will cut off from Jeroboam every male in Israel, bond and free; I will take away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as one takes away refuse until it is all gone.
