Dying to Self?

This phrase came about some time ago and has been used in different ways. What does God’s word say about this? How can we understand? The word says we are none without sin. If we are none without sin and God hates sin would it not mean when we repent, which means to turn from sin and do what is right, that we are to deny that which God hates and choose to follow what is good in God’s sight? Maybe we could think of it as dying to sin.

John 14:15 If you Love Me keep My commandments.

Jesus spoke plainly in this when rebuking Peter:

Matthew 16:23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, satan! You are an offense to Me, for YOU ARE NOT MINDFUL OF THE THINGS OF GOD, BUT THE THINGS OF MAN.”

Jesus loves and obeys the Father and loves us.

John 14:15 If you love Me keep My commandments.

James 1:21-22 Therefore lay aside all filthiness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be DOERS of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

Love what is good and hate what is evil.

I am God's work in progress. God's word says "be holy as I am holy." The only way to accomplish this is to turn our lives over to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I have found that this is a learning process but begins with a real desire to know Him. My prayer is Lord keep me on your paths of righteousness bringing glory and honor to your name.
