Itching Ears?

What does the Scripture mean by this term, “itching ears?” Do we find ourselves refusing to believe something because we don’t like it? Maybe like refusing to believe covid exist? We are to use wisdom in all things not blindly believe something because it sounds good to us. This can take time and being watchful with much prayer and study.

2 Timothy 4:2-3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but will according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from truth and be turned aside to fables.

Today we can see this in propaganda, much of which if we take the time to think about is so sensational that it is easy to see it has been created to cause hate, fear, and division but some is so subtle that we don’t recognize the danger. Covid is still taking lives and yet we want to ignore it and many have paid with their lives either through death or loss of health and quality of life. Things really haven’t changed from what scripture says about infectious disease with the exception, the gift given to someone to learn how to make vaccines. Leviticus tells us how to deal with infectious disease. It says washing under running water, go out from others and cover the mustache. This was set up for leprosy and other infectious diseases of that time. About 104 years ago we were told the same things when the Spanish flu killed millions before the flu vaccine was created. History tells us what has gone before. God did not leave us on our own. God’s word gives us much guidance. The old saying, “If it sounds too good to be true it probably is” well much of today’s propaganda is geared towards causing fear, hate, and anger. Evil wants us moving and believing before we even have time to question or think. Let us slow down move to God’s word and look for His wisdom.

Titus 3:9-10 But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless. Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.

Proverbs 27:12 A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself; the simple pass on and are punished.

Matthew 17:16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles?

Do we let our anger cloud our judgement?

Proverbs 17:27 He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.

Proverbs 22:24-25 Make no friendship with an angry man, and with a furious man do not go, lest you learn his ways and set a snare for your soul.

With all the things coming at us we need to always seek God’s word for guidance; the whole of God’s word, the Good Shepherd.

I am God's work in progress. God's word says "be holy as I am holy." The only way to accomplish this is to turn our lives over to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I have found that this is a learning process but begins with a real desire to know Him. My prayer is Lord keep me on your paths of righteousness bringing glory and honor to your name.
