Some one used the defense that lying is not illegal. In our judicial system lying to the court is illegal. If we claim to be Christ followers we answer to God. Lying causes harm to those who are lied to. There are no little white lies; all lies are lies. What does God’s word say about lying?
Proverbs 26:28 A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it, and a fluttering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things the Lord hates, yes seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises evil plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.
If God hates lies should we not hate lies? It is hard to discern the truth in our world right now so we may repeat something that later proves to be false. What is our best course of action? Pray before we speak about things, keep our words about others positive or none at all, we should also be safe people and not repeat what others tell us.
Proverbs 11:13 A talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter.
Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praise worthy meditate on this things.
1 John 2:6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
Isaiah 53:9 And they made His grave with the wicked; But with the rich at His death, because He had done no violence, nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Though we are none perfect, we are none free of sin should we not strive to keep our tongues from speaking evil? Should we strive to love our neighbor as ourselves? To love others as Christ loves us?
Romans 13:10 Love does no harm to a neighbor, therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
